The Journal of Forestry Research has been accredited by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences since 2008. The last accreditation was on 21 June 2013 (accredition number: 538/AU3/P2MI-LIPI/06/2013) which will be valid until 2016. IJFR will be issued in one volume every year including two issues which will be delivered every April and October. Abstract

Indonesia signifies as the biggest agarwood producer country in the world. Its demand and price tend to increase and have brought about over exploitation of agarwood. Consequently, its population in nature has decreased significantly. To overcome the situation, since 1995, agarwood has been included in the CITES Appendix II. However, illegal exploitation remains persistent and reaches an excessive level. In order to deal with it, agarwood cultivation and its artificial production have been undertaken at several provinces in Indonesia. Some supporting factors for agarwood cultivation and artificial production are the availability of potential land for extensive cultivation, appropriate agro climate condition, simple cultivation technique and already being well adopted by farmers, the availability of necessary pathogen for agarwood inoculation, and the increasing demand with relatively high price. The research aims to analyze the feasibility study of agarwood inoculation business at several stem diameters (15 - 25 cm; 26 -35 cm and 36 - 40 cm) and periods of inoculation (1 - 5 years). Data were collected through field observation and literature study. The results showed that inoculation on agarwood producer tree stands at 12.5% interest rate afforded positive net present value (NPV),  internal rate of return (IRR) is much higher than market interest and benefit cost (B/C) ratio >2 for those three diameter classes. Furthermore, if agarwood harvesting is delayed until five years after inoculation, NPV,  IRR and B/C ratio would be much higher. It can be concluded that inoculation on agarwood producer tree stands (at appropriate age for inoculation) is feasible to be developed.

Abstract

Flowering intensity, insects visiting flowers and pollinators of S. album were determined in a study conducted in an ex-situ conservation plot, Watusipat, Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta. Observations were undertaken during flowering season in 2009 and 2010, with an objective to determine the patterns of flowering and flower visiting insects of S. album in this population. In this study site, S. album typically flowers twice a year and reaches a peak on June and November. Flowers are visited by various insects, major in honey bees and ants. Santalum album is predominantly cross pollinated by insects however, low number of fruit set found in an open pollination. Variation of flowering intensity and the degree of self-incompatibility may influence the low number of fruit production in this species.

Abstract

Rhizoctonia solani is a soil pathogen that causes diseases in wide range of hosts of agricultural, horticultural and flower crops. Biological control is the most promising way for the diseases management and it is environment friendly too. The objective of this study was to isolate and screen the potency of soil bacteria as biological control from various local compost and peat soil of tropical peat swamp forest in Kalampangan Zone, Central Kalimantan. Forty seven isolates from peat soil and compost were screened for biocontrol agent of Rhizoctonia solani . R. Solani Seven out of thirteen peat soil isolates, and six out of thirty three compost isolates showed antagonistic activity against in Potato Dextrose Agar. The cultivation of the antagonistic isolates in Trypticase Soy Broth (TSB) was extracted and analysed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) column. The HPLC analyzes indicated that the antagonistic isolates produce an antifungal iturin A. Macroscopic observation of isolates colonies showed that form of their colonies were amuboid, myceloid, curled, circular, rhizoid, irregular and filamentous. These achievement indicate peat swamp forest not only offer a potential biocontrol agents of damping off but also provide a new source for production of antibiotics.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to formulate effective and efficient institutions of Revolving Fund Loans for Community Forest Plantation development (RFL CFP) in accordance with variation of field conditions. Benchmarking techniques were used to formulate the institution of RFL CFP. For that purpose, Independent of Direct Assistance Rural Agribusiness Development (IDA RAD) from the Ministry of Agriculture was selected as a benchmark as it was good in performance. The study was conducted in three provinces, i.e. Riau, South Kalimantan (November 2008 to April 2009) and West Java (May 2009 to February 2011). Comparative study was used to analyze the institutions based on the agency theory. The results showed that the institutional of RFL CFP have not accomodated the differences in characteristics, perceptions and capacities of the parties. As a result, the institutions have not been able to overcome the risk of moral hazard, adverse selection and high transaction costs. On the other hand, the institution of IDA RADhas a positive impact on agency relationship. High repayments by IDA RADagent and the increasing number of agents each year have proved the impact.

Abstract

Wood anatomy of Shorea mujongensis P.S. Ashton was investigated in order to ensure this species belongs to yellow meranti group. Such study is very important since this species is already listed in the red list of IUCN and classified as critically endangered species. The microscopic slides were prepared according to the Johansens method, while the anatomical features observed according to the IAWA  List. The results show that S. mujongensis wood exhibit brown heartwood, light brown sapwood, rough texture, straight grain sometimes interlocked and somewhat rough. The main microscopic characters are growth rings indistinct; vessel diffuse, mostly solitary, rounded to oval; simple perforation plate and alternate intervessel pits; parenchyma scanty paratracheal to thin vasicentric; axial intercellular canals in long tangential line, radial intercellular canal and vasicentric tracheids present; rays uniseriate and multiseriate, prismatic crystal in procumbent cells; fiber length 1,294 µm, diameter 26 µm and wall thickness 4µm. Macroscopic and microscopic observation of S. mujongensis wood confirms the species belongs to yellow meranti group. The assesment on fiber dimensions and derived values of the wood fibers classified the wood into class quality II. It indicates that this species is moderately favorable as raw material for pulp and paper manufacture.

Abstract

Phenolic is well known as a secondary metabolite that plays an important role in plant defense system. Information about the fungi-impeded role of secondary metabolite is important in achieving success of artificial agarwood production, in that fungi induction imparted to the selected potential trees will be more effective and efficient. This research was aimed to investigate the correlation of agarwood tree phenolics in relation with the susceptibility of corresponding trees to Fusarium solani attack in the formation of agarwood and observing total phenolics content of Aquilaria crassna and Aquilaria microcarpa trees prior to inoculation. Twenty trees of A. microcarpa at Carita, a Forest Area for Special Function (FASF) and ten of A. crassna at Dramaga Research Forest were inoculated with isolate of F. solani in spiral pattern around their stem from ground level to about 1.5 m in height. Prior to inoculation, wood strips were taken off from the stem for total phenolics content. The result revealed that total phenolics content and infection area tended to have a negative correlation. Since the quantity of agarwood is highly related with the infection area, then trees with lower phenolics content should be selected for the more effective and efficient artificial agarwood production.
